Description

This Evelyne 16 Black Clemence PHW is in Black clemence leather with palladium hardware and features contrast stitching, large perforated H in circle (front), pull tab top snap closure and a sporty, removable shoulder/crossbody strap. The interior is lined with natural leather.

Originally founded as a harness workshop in 1837, many of Hermès modern-day designs take inspiration from the house’s equestrian roots. However, Evelyn has taken this connection to the next level: the bag was created specifically with horse riding in mind. Named after Évelyne Bertrand, who was head of Hermès’ riding department, the bag was designed for carrying grooming equipment.

The Hermès Evelyne was used exclusively by the riding department until the early 2000s when the bag was officially transferred to the leather goods department and began production for Hermès lovers to add to their collections.

Remaining true to its nomadic roots, the Evelyne 16 Black Clemence PHW bag adapts seamlessly to the wearer’s rhythm. The bag strikes the perfect balance between function and fashion. The Evelyne bag is designed to move with you. Its minimalist silhouette is lightweight and free from linings, allowing for both your body and mind to feel free.

This sporty bag is a true testament to its equestrian heritage, preserving the original shoulder strap and oval hoofprint. The H-shaped perforation on the back, originally intended for drying grooming accessories, adds a unique touch of functionality. It was traditionally worn against the body, but aren’t rules meant to be broken?

Completely unlined with no internal pockets, the Evelyne has an air of chic simplicity which lends itself well to casual outfits. In contrast to other classic Hermès bags, it has an open top with just a small leather tab and press-stud fastening to secure it. The Evelyne’s wide, detachable canvas strap makes for a comfortable cross-body experience, and is a design nod to a horse’s girth (the strap which helps secure its saddle). Thanks to its clean, utilitarian aesthetic, many consider the Evelyne to be a unisex bag – the perfect partner to everyday life, whatever your gender.

This Evelyne is crafted in Clemence, one of Hermès’s most popular leathers. Clemence is a large-grained skin that was originally created for luggage and first appeared in Hermès’ collections in 1992. The technique that produces this large grain is called Drumming, which softens the skin. Clemence, named for the daughter of the designer who introduced it into Hermès’ collections, is very similar to Togo. Both are very popular; Clemence is made from the male calf and Togo is made from the female.

Clemence has a semi-matte smooth, pebbled-grained surface that creates a slightly slouchy and relaxed handbag Clemence and Togo are both natural leathers and quite similar, but Clemence is smoother to the touch and has slightly larger grains and no veining compared to Togo.

In line with our current obsession with all-things-mini in the bag world, the petite Mini Evely is unsurprisingly popular, particularly amongst the Instagram generation. The Mini can fit your daily essentials for running about town: a phone, keys, lipstick and your cardholder.

Available in Hermès boutiques since 1978, the Evelyne has steadily grown in popularity over the past decade. A pared-back messenger bag, the Evelyne has become a hit for the fashion house and, due to its easy-wearing practicality and comparatively lower price, is a great entry-level style for new collectors. Trust us – once you invest in the Evelyne 16 Black Clemence PHW, you’ll never look back.
